Fort Dodge recalls one lot of rabies vaccine

Fort Dodge Animal Health has recalled about 330,000 doses of a rabies vaccine after a quality-assurance test indicated an issue with the duration of protection.

The company confirmed one dog contracted rabies after receiving a dose from Serial 873113A of its Rabvac 3 TF vaccine. A statement from Fort Dodge added that the primary reason a vaccinated animal would contract the disease is because of a poor immune response.

The company has sent letters about the voluntary recall to veterinarians who might have purchased doses from Serial 873113A. The lot went onto the market in November 2004 and expired June 29, 2006. Fort Dodge also has conducted potency testing on other lots of the vaccine, all of which have met requirements.

Veterinarians who administered doses from Serial 873113A should review their records to identify animals that received product from that lot and then notify owners about the need to revaccinate. Fort Dodge is providing a suggested script for calling clients, along with a Q&A for clinics to help address additional concerns.

The company also is providing free rabies vaccine and $25 per animal to cover the cost of revaccination. To process payments, Fort Dodge requires records for each animal, documenting initial administration of Serial 873113A and revaccination.

Veterinarians can contact their Fort Dodge representative or the company's sales and marketing department at (800) 477-1365 for information. Veterinarians who have medical questions can contact Professional Services at (800) 533-8536.
