Hi everyone,
I thought you all who have cats would enjoy following this in case you have to deal with it yourself some day.
As many of you know I have been taking care of 5 rescue kittens. 2 Have been adopted!
The other 3 *ALL* came down with Upper respiratory or Kennel cough, which dogs get, (seems to be a disagreement between veterinarians if cats can get KC or not! ) So, they sometimes refer to it as Upper Respiratory. What ever they want to call it is fine with me, LOL.......but no matter which way you cut it, he has a really, really bad cold. So, I will put my notes here as a matter of record for you all and we shall see how this goes.
Like myself, the rescue is not one to rush to the veterinarian when it is something we can deal with ourselves. So, first we are seeing what we can do on out own. So far, so good. He is not dehydrated and is now on meds. Notes below~ _________________________________________________________________________________________
2008/11/14 Pablo Very, very sick and extremely congested. Called Linda. She gave me lots of great advice and directions for him. So, as of now, he is in master bath with door shut and steam vaporizer going 24/7 He has not eaten or drank anything since yesterday and I am not sure he even did then.
2008/11/15 Around 11:30 AM , I went and picked up food and meds (DOXYCYCLINE 50mg) that Linda sent with Shawne over at Pet Smart. He needs 50mg every 12 hours. Will gradually be moving that back too 11:30 as I never go to bed before that and that way I am up!
1:30 pm FOOD GIVEN : 2 Baby Teaspoons
MEDS GIVEN : Poured 50mg from capsule and one 1 baby teaspoon of wet food. Inserted spoon and wiped spoon on roof of mouth. All gone!~ he did swallow it and seemed like he is starving. Managed to get one more baby teaspoon into him before he rejected me and the food, LOL
PEDEALITE (WALGREENS -Unflavored, PEDIATRIC ELECTROLYTE SOLUTION) GIVEN: 2 Teaspoons given with syringe.
NOSE SUCTIONED ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Pookie is completely recovered as far as I can tell, as of 11/15/08 (he is at Pet Smart and I checked on him today) His breathing sounds good and he is not stuff or congested.
Prentice is with me and is sneezing, but still eating and drinking and not coughing or wrenching.......... .so far!

Pamela,
Where would they have picked it up from - could be another cat at the adoption centre do you think? Oscar has in the past picked up Kennel Cough at the groomer. How is your pain? and more so how is your sleep?

Marg Well, the pain is bad sometimes and not so bad others times and sometimes it only hurts if I touch my leg or parts of my body that is hurting that day! Sleeping is OK unless I have Night terrors. But, with Pablo being so sick and me tending to him... I am tired. Maybe now that he seems to be *turning around*, I will get some sleep tonight. Now all I need to do is worry about Prentice catching it and having to go through it all with him. Almost every cat in the PetSmart center had it.........so I am sure the caught it there.
