ROSEMARY - Questions and Statements

Is it fact, that Rosemary can cause seizures for some dogs, or dogs with seizures should not have rosemary?

I have an epileptic dog. While I don't add rosemary. I certainly don't worry about the small amounts that are found in many commercial products.

I think the cautions for epileptics are more for the essential oils.

It's used in some of the more "natural" dog foods as a preservative. Not that rosemary isn't a tasty and useful herb, but it's not one I'd reach for to treat a pet.

Not according to Mary Wulff-Tilford (a respected herbalist who co-wrote Herbs for Pets). Apparently, a factor is the form of rosemary - oil or herb. I still think, though, that it could easily be a trigger for individual dogs.

Mary L. Wulff-Tilford & Gregory L. Tilford
from their book "Herbs for Pets"

Although these herbs do not represent a cure for epilepsy, their reported effects include less frequent and less severe episodes.

Lemon Balm, ginko, rosemary(3) , hop, passionflower and perhaps kava kava (research is promising in the area of controlling seizures in rodents) may also be effective in the treatment of chronic seizures.

this is a very interesting article on Rosemary. While I have never intentionally prepared food for them with rosemary in it, they do get left overs and I use a lot of fresh herbs. I originally started growing rosemary for my bees. My daughter moved back home to finish college and brought her dog.. she loves playing in rosemary. This article now makes me wonder why she loves the plant so much. Some investigation is in order.

thank you for posting the information.

Very interesting ! I wish it was a healthy for our furry friends as it is for us humans !

FYI - I whenever we add a website URL, we have to be sure to click on the URL box above the post, or the link will sometimes get truncated and won't work.

You will notice that in some older posts the ink is not showing up or will not work. I am trying to locate the mall, but have not found all of them yet ! It happened when they did something to the forum program last year.

If you are not sure what I mean, click on edit in your original post and you will see the website URL and then just before it and after it, you will see these with the website in between :)

not a problem.. when the URL is too big I can use the box for URL's or use a TinyURL (located on my toolbar)

I have noticed in my search re: Rosemary for canines.. it is in many 'healthy' dog foods. I am still on a search but as I find information I will continue to post it... if that is ok.

I certainly wouldn't think of using rosemary in my dogs food, thought they get any left overs I have and never thought much about giving them the skin off of rosemary chicken.. now I am rethinking as I research.

here is an article that mentions Rosemary Oil as a problem

http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/Poison.h ... hor1560772

to do a search by a specific word...

press 'control (ctrl) and F' at the same time. A box will open usually at the bottom of your screen. Type the word you are looking for, hit Next and it will find it for you so you don't have to search the entire page.. scrolling, scrolling, scrolling.

Ctrl F I can't live without it

Brook, if you always use the URL box, then if the page disappears or if they move it around on their site, we can read the URL by clicking on EDIT and see what the main site is and then do a search for where they moved it to! Using tinyURL won't do that.

Yes, I do believe that the concerns, is the OIL that is the danger to pets due to its high concentration level, verses the dry.
